Kent airport plans
An environmental disaster
To
cope with demand in the skies over the UK, the government are considering building
a new four-runway airport on marshland at the mouth of the Thames - a proposal
that has united ecologists, ornithologists and wildfowlers in opposition.
The North Kent Marshes have been earmarked as a potential site for a new
airport. The acres of flat marsh, that could so easily accommodate hundreds of
intercontinental jets, are teeming with life; it is regarded as one of Europe's
most important wildlife sites. Grazing sheep and cattle share the wetlands with
up to 250,000 breeding and migrating birds. Building a new airport on the marshes
is the least likely - and most expensive - of several options under consideration,
at a reported £13 billion. Building an airport on our marshes would
destroy the natural habitat, planes would risk damage and disruption from colliding
with birds - not to mention the dangers of having the oil refinery across the
river in the flight path.
It is important that KWCA members stand up and be counted at every opportunity,
as opposing these plans. The Association have become a 'Prime Objector'
