Wildlife Habitat Trust
The Wildlife Habitat Trust
was Founded by the BASC in 1986. The Trust operates as the UK's sporting
shooting conservation fund, raising and distributing funds through grants
and loans, for deserving habitat conservation projects. To date the Wildlife
Habitat Trust have assisted over 50 projects distributed throughout England,
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Including the purchase of over 3,000
acres of prime wildlife habitat, these projects represent an investment
into wildlife conservation of over £1m.
Many WHT projects have benefited from funds generated by the successful
UK Habitat Conservation Stamp Programme. An example of the UK Habitat
Conservation Stamp is shown (left).
The Habitat Stamp Programme was launched in 1991 by Environment Minister
Mr Tony Baldry MP.
It attracted wide acclaim with support from HRH The Prince Phillip, the
Department of the Environment, the statutory conservation agencies, and
the European Parliament Inter-group on Field Sports, Fishing & Conservation.
The UK Habitat Stamp Programme has allowed the Wildlife Habitat Charitable
Trust to work in partnership with Natural
England and the other statutory conservation agencies to encourage
local initiatives to protect and manage important sites. A wide range
of wildlife benefit from WHT projects including rare plants and insects,
the natterjack toad, the great crested newt, and scarce breeding birds
such as the little tern and redshank.
