Gun Dogs
What sex dog to choose?
After choosing what breed of dog you would like, and deciding upon a litter,
the next decision is to pick out which sex to choose. There are some basic
differences in dogs and bitches, but the overall thing to remember is
that
one sex does not make a better gundog than the other.
Most of the difference is purely physical. Dogs are usually stronger and
bigger, but that does not mean they are more aggressive. The only time
they
are known to be aggressive is when bitches are in heat, but that is only
with other male dogs.
Bitches are in heat many times in their life, and may have hormonal mood
changes due to that, but spaying can take care of both. Some people think
dogs wander more or bitches are more loving with families, while other
people think the opposite. It is really a matter of personal preference
on
deciding whether to choose a dog or bitch. Regardless of the sex, they
both
make excellent companions and can perform exactly the same job.
It is a popular saying amongst gundog trainers that 'a bitch is trouble
a
couple of times a year whilst a dog is trouble all year around'.
If you require help or advice in choosing a breed of gundog, club members
can ask a more experienced member of the club, since there are many breeds
of gundog that are owned by club members.
BASC members can contact the gundog officer at the BASC who can help with
most questions about gundog breeds that you may have.
